How people move around Harlow is key to the success of the Garden Town, allowing housing and employment growth to be achieved.

We want to make sure that this growth results in improvements across the town.

This strategy sets out ways of supporting safe and sustainable travel choices for Harlow’s new and existing communities.

We can help make a better Harlow through new growth by:

• Providing local facilities to reduce the need to travel

• Investing in safe and attractive infrastructure for walking, cycling and public transport

• Providing travel choices that support healthy lifestyles

• Ensuring that we can adapt to new and innovative forms of transport in the future

We won’t make a better Harlow by increasing road space and highway capacity for cars, because:

• Wide roads don’t mean less congestion

• New roads often mean new traffic, as congestion shifts from elsewhere

• More cars mean means more negative environmental impact

We would rather invest money in facilities, services and neighbourhoods for people – rather than in roads

Getting Around in the Garden Town is the start of our work to ensure that we address the challenges linked to unsustainable travel demand.
